Acc to Skordas, Early Settlers of Maryland, pp 440-441, numerous persons named Stevens immigrated or were transported to Maryland between 1650 and 1680. Skordas doesn't record actual ship records, but rather the records of the assignment of land. A person who immigrated paid his own way and was entitled to 50 acres on his own account. A person who was transported had their way paid by someone else, and that person was entitled to the 50 acres. Presumably, the 50 acres only accrued to an adult. Therefore we can assume that all the Stevens listed by Skordas were 21 or older at the time 50 acres were assigned on their account. Skordas lists people alphabetically. Below, I've regrouped the Stevens so that people in the same book (liber) and page (folio) are together. If they got land together, there's a good chance they're families; where a family relationship is known, Skordas notes it. In the case of Charles Stevens, ancestor of many Stevens and others, just this much information permits educated guessing of dates which isn't far different from dates given without source in many genealogies. I calculated the following just by assuming the youngest child was 21, children were born at 2 year intervals, the parents were married a year before the first child, and the parents were 21 at the time of marriage: Charles Stevens of Anne Arundel Co (9:499), who Immigrated prior to 1666, b. ca 1615. Susan Stevens, wife (9:448), married England ca 1638 at age 18, b. ca 1620 Sarah Stevens, daughter (9:448) NYT 27 in 1666, b. ca 1639 Susan Stevens, daughter (9:448) NYT 25 in 1666, b. ca 1641 Elizabeth Stevens, daughter (9:448) NYT 23 in 1666, b. ca 1643 Charles Stevens, Jr. son (9:499) not younger than 21 in 1666, b. ca 1645 Recorded at the same time was Frances Stevens (9:499), Transported 1667, wife of Richard. She or her husband may be related to Charles, but the only Richards who preceded Frances were Richard, Immigrant, of Talbot Co (16:466, 1660), and Richard ( 9:54,22), transp 1665) There is another reference to Charles; this Charles Stevens (5:485) was living in 1662, son of Charles, who died 1658. Whether this is Charles Stevens, Immigrant, and his father, or some other Charles, can't be deduced from the available information. My query to readers of this would be whether anyone has any information related to the other Stevens listed by Skordas that shows their descendants, or any linkages to Charles? We can assume that some -- perhaps many -- of those who arrived in Maryland in the 1660's died without issue. But I'd guess that more than just Charles went on to found families who have living descendants. Resource: From Skordas, Early Settlers of Maryland, p. 440.
