If the 1790 census entry for Bela Stevens in Hillsdale, Columbia Co., N.Y. was transcribed correctly, then I think you've got a Bela and two Stiles in very close proximity per the following from the Columbia Co. web site plus the baptism records I posted earlier:
COLUMBIA COUNTY NAMES, THEIR MEANINGS AND HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Compiled by Alton E. Skinkle
[The E.B. Gifford & Son Furniture and Undertaking Company of Chatham, NY, published excerpts of "The Columbia County Name Series" in advertisements for their company. Mr. Skinkle put a booklet together after many people requested the entire series. Our thanks to Carol Bartel for finding this booklet and sending us the text to share. -- Please note that some of these names have other "explanations" in other history sources. We don't know what source the advertisers were using. --G. Formel]
HILLSDALE - NOBLETOWN
In early Colonial Times, this community was known as Nobletown, because of the large number of people of high standing in rank who settled there. At this place it was famous as the last stop in New York State of captured British guns from Fort Ticonderoga which were being taken to Boston. In the middle of the 9th Century the present name Hillsdale was applied on account of the many hills and valleys around the settlement.
