His father was Johan Stritler and his mother Catherine Nesseir according to the New South Wales state records. He emigrted to Australia in the mid 1850's and changed his name to Theophille John Stettler. He married Honora Mogreth in 1856 in Parramatta (just west of Sydney) and they had 7 children.
