What is the Stearns Family Association?

Here is the introduction from the second volume of the “Genealogy and Memoirs of Charles and Nathaniel Stearns and their Descendants, Mrs. Avis (Stearns) Van Wagenen, 1901, July 1st.

“In the summer of 1892 a few persons in Syracuse, NY, and vicinity formed a New York State Association of the Stearns Families, with E. C. Stearns, President, Edson J. Stearns, Vice President, and Mrs. Avis (Stearns) Van Wagenen, Secretary and Treasurer. It was the intention of the association to solicit additional memberships until a sufficient number should join then from all parts of North America to form a National Organization, with the purpose of taking that part of “Bond’s Genealogies” pertaining to the Stearns families, as a basis for a new work, and bringing the records of all who co-operate in the movement down to the present time. “

Keeping this tradition in mind it has been my desire to continue the works started by those person that have assisted and added to this very large family tree. My name is Bryan Kent Stearns. I was born in Tacoma, Pierce Co., WA. on June 16th 1963, as twin and on Fathers Day. I became interested in family history in 1990 when I received a document with three generation on my mother’s side of the family. I was intrigued so I bought a program called Family Ties. Unfortunately this program was not around for long. To my excitement I found Family Tree Maker@ Version 4.0. As it turned out this program was the same as Family Ties. I am not certain but I believe Broderbund bought the program and expanded on it.

Back to the story.
In my research I have found many inconsistencies regarding the Stearns (Sterne, Stern, Starnes, Sternes, Stern, Stearnes, etc…) surname. After pulling my hair out for several years I stumbled on some information that opened my eyes. The information on the original Stearns family association, it was called the “New York State Association of the Stearns Families”.
As the years went by the association never received enough acceptance and it died off. At present, 2004, there have been new generations added to the descendants of the Stearns family. It is my understanding that at least five more generations of descendants now exist. A rekindling of feelings for preservation and a desire for these descendants to re-awaken the knowledge of their heritage has brought about the organization of The Stearns Family Association. The initial goals of the newly reorganized association are to:
•       Provide a medium for sharing and extending the collected information about the Stearns family, the descendants and ancestry from the already published books and other sources.
•       Identify the new generation of Stearns descendants.
•       Publicly acknowledge the contributions and leadership of all Stearns Family Association members.
Here is my Idea, to re-start the search for the truth and to continue the vision started originally by the founders of the NYSASF. Please contact me at for more information on joining the Stearns Family Association.

Many persons have contributed to the growing tree of the Stearns family but there are more than a dozen different beginnings. It is my personal goal to research and prove all truths regarding the Stearns family. I invite any and all persons belonging to the Stearns lineage to join me in this quest. It is not the intention of the Stearns Family Association to leave any one person behind as we are all family.

Best of wishes in your search for family history.
