Silas was definitely a Rev. War Soldier. His parents were John and Mary.I don't have a maiden name on Mary. They are recorded with the last name "Stallings" in some of the records, as was Silas until he moved to Alabama and the name settled out to be "Sterling."Silas had a brother John, a brother James, and a sister Winney who married Dempsey Winburn. There may have been another sister who's name is unknown presently.I am desended from Josiah Sterling who married Elizabeth Jacobs. It is not clear if Hilluriah is a son of Silas. No records exist that I'm aware of which will prove the relationship. For that matter, it is difficult to prove which, if any, of the Blount County Sterlings are descended from Silas since he never mentioned his children in any of the official documents (i.e. National Archives Pension Application; he never made a will). However, even though Hilluriah is an unusual name, it occurs a couple more times in the family.Sarah Sterling, who married William Hale, named one of her sons Hilluriah.John Gibson Sterling, who married Nancy Mallaby, named one of his sons Hilluriah. There is reason enough to suspect that John and Sarah are offspring of Silas and perpetuated the name due to kinship.Hilluriah is probably either a brother to John and Sarah; or maybe a nephew. These two Hilluriahs other later moved to Texas.Silas is believed to have married twice. His first wife is unknown.Silas was the only Sterling head of household in Blount County Alabama for the 1830 census and all of the children are listed living with him.By 1840, some of the other Sterlings had gotten married and were listed as their own head of household. When Silas moved to Alabama in 1817, he brought a lot of children with him representing ages ranging from quite young to teens.Until more information comes to light, we can only speculate that the children were all Silas' from two different wives, or maybe his neices and nephews of relatives back in South Carolina.More research will possibly determine the relationship one way or another. What is your relationship to this bunch?
