F.E.Sterling,
Sterling, Stirling, Starling, Stallings, and
Stellings were sometimes interchangeable spellings for the name Stirling. In the 1790 Census for York County, SC, brothers James and Silas STALLINGS were living as neighbors. Silas STERLING applied for a Revolutionary War pension and in his application stated that he had previously lived in York County,SC.
In that case, the Census taker obviously
wrote the name the way he heard it....not the way it was actually spelled.
In Amite County, MS for the 1810 Census,
John STALLINS was living next to Samuel
McCoy.In 1817, John STERLING was reimbursed
by the county for some illegally seized cattle.John's last name was actually
STIRLING.
I can give you many more examples of this,
but I think these two may be enough.
