There is some confusion regarding the true first name of the wife of Hiram Putnam, b 13 Nov 1800 Wilton, NH, and married 25 Dec 1828, Greenwood, Steuben Co. NY. A couple of the Steuben county histories say that Hiram Putnam and LUCINDA Stephens' marriage was the first one in the town of Greenwood. Her father's name is given as Ezra Stephens. On every census on which I have found this couple, her name is given as Lucinda.
Plowden Stevens' book on the Stephens/Stevens family gives the name of Hiram Putnam's wife as Cynthia Stephens, dau of Ezra. I think there may have been some confusion on the part of Plowden's sources, because according to various sources, Ezra's wife's name was Cynthia Stephens, daughter of John and Olive.
If anyone knows of a way to clarify and prove which name is correct, I would appreciate it. Most of the postings on the Rootsweb and other sites, give Cynthia as Hiram Putnam's wife, and I just feel that this is an error, and that Cynthia is Lucinda's mother's name.
