Hi Billy,

As Jeptha Sr. was married 1846 Walton Co. I thought would look in 1840 to see if the family was there.
I also found a marriage of a William Daniel Stevens married Jane katherine Livesey 1839 Walton GA

Stevens may just be wrong spelling of Stephens.

In 1840 BUNCOMBE, WALTON GA there are three Stephens men

Abner with family:

Males: 2 aged under 5, 1 aged 5-10, 1 aged 10-15, and 1 aged 30-40
Females: 3 aged under 5, 1 aged 20-30

Daniel with family:
Males 1 aged 20-30 and
Females: 1 aged 15-20

Benjamin with family:

Males: 1 aged under 5, 2 aged 5-10, 2 aged 15-20, and 1 aged 30-40

Females: 1 aged under 5, a aged 10-15 and 1 aged 30-40

I am guessing here, but I think it likely that Daniel is another brother of Jeptha (the William Daniel name fits with family names and the Daniel is 1840 is likely the same William Daniel married 1840 as he is young and no children yet - only married part of a year)

I suppose Benjamin or Abner could be father of Jeptha. I lean toward Benjamin as I suspect Jeptha was living with his parents still as he didn't marry until 1846. If so , he would be one of the males aged 15-20. Abner has no males of that age group with him.

The problem is I looked for Benjamin in 1830 and 120 and found none in GA. Abner is there in Walton Co.

I found 2 Benjamin/s in North Carolina - Benjamin Jr. and Benjamin Sr. both living is Caswell, NC

Benjamin Jr. has 1 male aged 30-40, 1 female aged 5-10 and 1 aged 20-30 so cannot be same as fellow in 1840.

Benjamin Sr. has
Males: 3 aged 5-10, 1 aged 10-15, 2 aged 15-20, a aged 20-30 and a aged 50-60

Females: 2 aged 15-20 and 1 aged 40-50

so his 3 aged 5-10 could be the 2 aged 15-20 in 1840 plus Daniel
the 2 aged 15-20 could be married and gone from the home by 1840, the 1 aged 20-30 would be Benjamin and the 1 aged 50-60 could be his or his wife's father

Females: 2 aged 15-20 could Benjamin's wife and ??? The 1 aged 40-50 could be a mother of Benjamin or his wife.

So it is pretty close and this may be Jeptha's family. We do know he was born NC but don't know when they came to GA.

I'm not sure how to prove whether Benjamin is Jeptha's father and how to prove if Daniel (William Daniel) is Jeptha's brother, but will keep looking.

I don't think Jeptha and James W. would have been brothers unless you mean Jeptha Jr. as Jeptha Sr. was born about 1821 and James W about 1863.

I think there must be some connection though - maybe James W. is a nephew of Jeptha?? I am going to look at Daniel and see if I can find his children.

..............................................
I thought I would do more checking before posting and I found Daniel. He does not seem to have a son James W.

I did find something interesting though. In 1850 census right next door to Jeptha and Livica are another Stephens family. How I missed this before I do't know.

They are James Stephens 79, wife Nancy 64 and son Samuel J. age 24. James and Nancy born NC Samuel born GA.

These could also be parents of Jeptha I suppose. If so then they would have been in GA in 1826 when Samuel was born so should be in 1830 and 1840 census. It is possible they may have been living with one or the other of their parents and not shown up.

I found a Nancy Stephens age 74 in 1860 census for Walton Co, living with
S.A.G. Stephens age 35, farmer born GA
Mary age 29 born GA
James age 8 born GA
and Mary age 10/12 born GA

I figure S.A.G. is likely Samuel and this is likely same family as 1850.

I tried to find a marriage for James and Nancy in NC or Georgia but had no luck.

I am dong most of this searching on ancestry.com with a little elsewhere but am now stuck and have not found anything more. I'm not sure where to look next but will keep it in mind and if I think of something I'll look for you.

Carolyn L
