I ran across a couple of messages and thought I could help though they were back over a couple of years.I have done a lot of research and have found that Elisha Stevens Sr. (1776-1851) was married to Mary Stephens, daughter of William and Elizabeth Stephens, who was Eli Thomas Stephens' sister.Apparently Eli and Elisha lived in Gonzales, Texas about 1848 and after.I have a notebook and have seen the distinction between the two families. The Stevens' and the Stephens' married into the other's family.I have seen a census from North Carolina and our family was spelled with a "ph."However sometimes the officials (as in marriage licenses) did not make the distinction.I have my William Eli Stephens marrying twice and I know from other documents that it was the same person and one is spelled with a "v" and one with a "ph".
I am descended from Eli and Susanna Stephens and his son Barnabus who was married to Christine Townsend. They had William Eli Stephens my great grandfather.Barnabus and Christine had F.D. Stephens, Narcissa Stephens, Susan Stephens and William Eli.Narcissa(b. 1843) my research says married William Coppedge (January 12, 1874 in De Witt county. Is this your line? One of Eli Stephens' children, Frances E. married Elisha Stevens, Jr.then she married James Wiley Steen.Elisha and Frances Stevens had Harriet, Frances Ella, Nancy W., and Elisha T. but apparently Elisha was married before to Asenath Steen and they had William, Sarah and Susannah Mary.Later after Elisha's death William Eli Stephens was granted guardianship of Elisha T. Stevens (minor heir of Elisha Stevens deceased Dec. 1865)Is this confusing or what?William Eli (son of Barnabus) had married Nancy W. Stevens (daughter of Elisha Jr.) and Elisha T. (being about 12 yrs old) went to live with his sister and her husband. It is intriguing to say the least. You can E-mail me if you want at [email protected], Pat Corn
