Fellow Stephens resaerchers & cousins,
What I'm about to post is in no way to suggest that all of the Stephens/Stevens families that I've found info about are in any way related or connected to each other. Also, it is not my intention to even infer that any or all of these family members are of Native American or of Indian blood.I have only included some of these families because of similar first naming patterns, or because of common location to those of the similar names that I have found. I hope that this post will be of help to the researchers of these families that turn out not to be related or connected to mine, directly at least. I am not an expert on these fams, and I have more questions than answers. Please feel free to offer answers, suggestions, corrections & opinions.
"A Short History of the Chickamauga People"(from a pamphlet of the Chickamauga Cherokee Indian Nation). pg.3 "Another band led by Dragging Canoe emigrated to Southeastern Missouri and Northwestern Arkansas".... "Following the great great Missouri earthquakes between 1811 and 1812, most of the Chickamaugas residing in Missouri fled to Arkansas. The majority constructed new towns between the White River and Black River in Northern Arkansas".
As far as I know, presently, none of the following Stevens or Stephens fams that I have found in SC/SE MO have ever claimed Indian blood. They are quite possibly of no relation to the ones of same/similar names in Northern AR.
MISSOURI TAXPAYERS 1819-1826; Lois Stanley, George F Wilson & Maryhelen Wilson; Southern Historical Press, Inc.; Greenville, SC; 1990: Cape Girardeau County: Combined Land and Property, 1821-1822-1823; p12 "Baker, George, Henry, John, Joseph, Mary, Peter & Thomas"; p17 "Ramsey, Andrew, John, Samuel, (1822)Samuel decd by John Stephens, William"; p19 "Stephens, Benjamin, DAVID, John, John adm. Sam'l Ramsey". Relationships of any members of these Baker, Ramsey or Stephens presently unknown.Biographies that include several possible descendents of these Stephens are found in GOODSPEEDS HISTORY of SOUTHEAST MISSOURI.Bio's of Judge DAVID Stevens (b 1828 MO), and his brother, BENJAMIN F Stevens (b 1834 MO), sons of John Stevens (,Jr b 1793 SC) and Sarah Ramsey (dau of David,b 1801 NC), are found on p830. John Stevens, Jr and David Ramsey came to Cape Girardeau (now Bollinger) Co, MO in 1808.I have not found a complete list of the nine ch of John Stephens, Jr & Sarah Ramsey, but at the time the bio's were written (date not on title page that I copied), their son GARRETT and dau Rebecca were also still living.Sarah M STEPHENS (Mrs Jonas M Snider, b 1833 Gibson Co, TN) and KEZIAH J STEVENS (Mrs Wm M Welch, b TN), daus of JOSIAH & Abigail Yancy (Mederis/Maderis) Stephens/Stevens were found in the bio's of their respective husb's on pgs 848 & 853/4.
Note: Wm M Welch had md Jonas Snider's sis, Cinderella J, before he md Keziah.Jonas & Cinderella's sis, Surrilda E Snider md Benj F Stevens, prob cousin of Sarah M & Keziah J. Stevens/Stephens.According to Stephens fam gen forum post #1168, and Stevens fam gen forum post #3253 (which gives a complete list of 13 ch of Josiah & Abigail (Maderis) Stevens), Sarah M & Keziah J had a bro, Joseph Benj b 1830 Gibson Co, TN.Josiah apparently emigrated to TN abt same time John, Jr emigrated to MO.
What happened to BENJAMIN & DAVID Stephens of early tax lists of Cape Girardeau Co, MO & thier fams/desc's?
1790 Heads of Families of SC listed in Ninety-Six Dist., Edgefield Co: STEPHENS, Abanatus (Augustus), Elisha, John, Jo'n (Jonathan), JOSIAH, Silvanus. RAMSEY, Elendon Ephraim Esq., Isaac Sr, Isaac, SAMUEL, Thomas.TYNER, Demsey.
1800 FC of SC listed in Edgefield Co: STEVENS, Augustus, Elisha, Gideon, Isaac, John (3, but one could be Jonathan), JOSIAH. RAMSEY, Elizabeth, Ephraim, James, Thomas. TYNER,?.
Note: only Stephens listed above that was listed in 1810 FC of SC, in Edgefield Co, were Elisha & Jonathan.I only discovered name of Dempsey Tyner in 1790 list, yesterday, and have not checked for Tyner's in 1800/1810.Could this be same Dempsey Tyner who had many desc's listed in CHEROKEE BY BLOOD?The JOSIAH listed here is too old to be a bro of John (,Jr b 1793 SC), but is poss bro of John, Sr.
I'm now wondering if Stephens/Tyner connection goes all the way back to Edgefield Co, Ninety-Six Dist, SC?Very good possiblity that DAVID Stephens of Cape Girardeau Co, MO 1821-23 was same DAVID Stephens of NW AR?If not that same DAVID, he may have been in West TN at same time as JOSIAH
& Abigail (Maderis) Stephens?
There is only one more Stevens of East TN that I wish to mention, before other Stevens/Stephens of NW AR & SW MO.(George?) Washington Stephens was only Stephens/Stevens that I have found listed in 1805 Tax list of Roane Co, TN.George Stephens md Polly Moore 4/19/1809 ROTN.PHILLIP STEPHENS md Mary A Oliver 12/5/1817 ROTN, George Stephens, bondsman.
1840 FC of Barry Co, MO; Sugar Cr Tp; p??; STEVENS, PHILLIP 1122001-1200001.STEVENS, GEORGE 00001-0001(son of Phil?).
1850 FC Barry Co,MO;Dist#5;p210; STEVENS, BENJAMIN 22 AR.1850 FC McDonald Co,MO;Dist#53;p97; STEVENS, BENJAMIN 22 AR, Nancy(???)20 VA (these 2 are prob same BEN STEVENS).1860 FC McDonald Co,MO;Mt.Tp;p47; STEPHENS, BENJAMIN 33 MO, Rebecca (???)30 MO, PHILIP 9, Robert 7, Henry 5, Mary 3 & Female infant 1/12 (all ch b MO).
1850 FC Crawford Co,AR;Lee's Cr TP;p340-1/1; STEVENS, PHILLIP 54 VA, Mary A (Oliver) 54 NC, Phillip 11 TN. p340/7/7 STEVENS, Eli 26 TN, Mary A (???) 14 AR. p340/12/12 Wilson, James 46 KY, Aisly (???) 37 TN, Wm 4 IL, James 2 & Martha 1/12 AR; STEVENS, Samuel 18 IL(TN?).Crawford Co; Jasper Tp;p335; STEPHENS, GEORGE (son of Phil?). Note: except for names PHILLIP & BENJAMIN, I have not found any connection of this Stevens/Stephens fam,(of 1796 VA & 1805- 1817 ROTN ?), to my PHILLIP (believed to be son of David).
I will stop here on post #2 of 3 posts, and will post #3, shortly.
I hope some of the Stephens/Stevens fam researchers of early MO/AR will post followups with the answers to many ?s in these 3 posts. Thanks in advance for all your help.
