George Stephens/Stephan, Herkimer Co, NY
I'v got some pieces of a puzzle, and am looking for confirmation and other pieces.
George Stevens or Stephan of Fairfield or Manheim Townships, Herkimer County, NY, and his wife Margaret Moyer, had at least three children beween 1800 and 1814.
George, born between 1800 and 1810 (1810 Federal Census), married and had a daughter Libby who married a Wardwel and lived in Adams, Jefferson Co., NY, in 1906.
Nancy, born February 22, 1802, married James W. Barber (not sure that Nancy was the child of George and Margaret.Name appears in an early family genealogy, not confirmed by any records I have found)
Eliza Margaret or Margaret Eliza, born February 10, 1806, in either Fairfield or Manheim, married Thomas Pratt Douglass in West Leyden, Lewis Co., NY, on Mar. 4, 1829, died in Boonville, Oneida Co., NY, March 24, 1885.There were 8 children born in West Leyden, and these are known to me and not part of the puzzle.
(There is only one daughter under 10 in the 1810 Federal Census, which is what leads me to question Nancy, above.George, Eliza and Jacob (below) were definitely siblings)
Jacob, born January 4, 1814, baptized May 30, 1914 at the Trinity Palatine Church, Manheim Twp, Herkimer Co, NY., married Mary Ann Monk, January 1, 1835 in Norwich, Oxford Co, Ontario, Canada (strange as the Monk family was probably also from Herkimer Co., NY), died February 2, 1895.Had a daughter Anna who married a Gouery and lived in 1906 in Lewis, Cass Co., IA.Jacob's baptismal record is one of two sources on the first name of the father, and the only source I have on the first name of the mother.
I believe that George Sr. died in Herkimer County in October of 1814, but have not found a cemetery record.
Mary Ann Monk was probably the daughter of Nicholas Monk and Caty Moyer, and Caty and Margaret Moyer were probably sisters or cousins.Believe Margaret Moyer was married before she married George Stevens or Stephan, to a Gark, and after he died in 1814 to a Smith.
This is the sum total of what I know.Happy to tell anyone interested where each piece came from.Even happier if anyone can confirm or expand on the above.I believe George and Margaret were members of the German Palatine community in Herkimer Co., but there were also English Stevens there, so am not even sure of this.
