Dr. Hermann F. Stempel - Ft.Madison,IA
We are researching our Stempel family that imigrated to the United States in the mid-1800's.Any information or contacts would be appreciated.
Dr. Hermann Friedrich Wilhelm Stempel, Sr. was born 4 July, 1824 in Peitz/Drachausen, a Province of Brandenburg, Prussia. He died 27 Oct. 1916 in Ft. Madison, Iowa.
After graduating from the Seminary of Ordnung in Eilenburg, Prussia, (now Germany) on 29 Sep 1844, he taught until August, 1847 when he left for America with his father, Christian Wilhelm Stempel, and family.They landed in Baltimore on 18 Oct 1847, and went to St. Louis via the Mississippi River by river boat.They then traveled on to Ft. Madison, Lee Co., IA, arriving on the evening of 18 Nov 1847.
On 22 Apr 1852, he became a citizen of the United States having his application for citizenship approved in Lee Co., IA.He practiced medicine under his father, practicing for many years in Ft. Madison, IA.He was an honorary member of the Fort Madison Medical Society.His family is listed as living on Fourth St., between Market and Chestnut, in Ft. Madison, IA in 1862.Beginning around 1852, he held the office of deputy County Treasurer and Recorder for eleven years.In 1869, he was appointed United States Revenue Gauger and held that position for a number of years.
Actually listed in old family documents as Friedrich Willhelm Hermann Stempel, but went by Hermann F. Stempel in most US papers and documents such as his US citizenship papers.
He also performed in at least one play, "Preciofa", 31 Jan 1876, at the Concordia Halle, Fort Madison Harmonie Vereins-Theater along with his sons Arthur and Eugen H.
He was married to Charlotte Wolter and had several children including an Arthur Henry Stempel who married Ida Margaret Windmayer.They in turn had a son named Wolter August Stempel who married Ruth Margaret Chapman, who in turn had a son named Wolter Chapman Stempel.Any information on this family would appreciated.
