William Stem, one of the oldest and most prominent residents, died Tuesday evening at 9 o'clock after an illness of six weeks from pneumonia. He was seventy eight years old. The funeral will be held tomorrow (Saturday), at 1:30 PM, from the home of his son-in-law, Hon. A. D. Borger, with services in Trinity Reformed Church, Coplay, by Rev. T. H. As a boy he availed himself of every opportunity to get as good an education as he could and he became a tailor, which trade he followed for nineteen years at Cherryville. In 1866, he and his brother George H. Stem, started in the manufacture of cars at this place, an industry that flourished until twenty years ago. Mr. Stem was an active and progressive citizen, public spirited and prominent in church, school and local affairs. He was especially devoted to public schools and strove to elevate the standard. In 1884 he retired to his handsome home at Stem and Main street, where he had a nice lawn and fine fruit trees, to which he gave his personal attention. Following a bitter fight in 1884 Mr. Stem was elected Treasurer of Northampton County. He was an active and influential Democrat in politics. Mr. Stem was married November 15, 1853, to Elizabeth A. Kemmerer of Mickley's. Invitations had been issued and preparations made to celebrate the golden wedding, but on account of the smallpox epidemic it had to be abolished. More About CELESTIA ANNA STEM: Burial: January 1931, Greenwood Cemetery, Northampton, PA Notes for ALFRED DEWALD BORGER: From "Portrait and Biographical Record of Lehigh, Northampton and Carbon Counties, Pennsylvania" 1895, Chapman Publishing Co.: ALFRED D. BORGER is a prominent business man who began life with only the natural ability with which he was endowed, and the results of energy and perserverance are no where better illustrated than in his career. He is the senior member of the firm A. D. Borger & Co., dealers in dry goods, groceries, notions, hardware, boots and shoes, and indeed everything which is usually found in a first-class country store. Their establishment, which is located in Stemton, does an annual business of about $15,000 and carries a stock of $5,000. Our subject, who is a native of Allen Township, Northampton County, was born on November 7, 1855, to William and Theresa Borger, also natives of this section. The family is classed among the oldest residents of the township, William Borger, the father of Alfred D., being an old landmark here. Grandfather Borger was born in Monroe County in1819, whence he later emigrated to this county. (1999 note: "Grandfather Borger" mentioned here is Theobald D. Borger, born in 1798 in Chestnut Hill, Northampton Co. now Monroe Co., emigrated to Swartz Dam, Allen Township, Northampton Co. before 1820. I believe the biographer here mistakenly took the date of emigration to Allen Township from his notes and used it as Theobold's birth year.)
