I am following up on these messages from 2000 in hopes of finding out more of the Steinmann family in Germany. While doing research on my own family, I am also researching that of my partner who is from the Stineman family.
I think they are 4th cousins of Anja Steinmann Ruckel through J. Ludwig Steinmann's U.S. descendants.
J. Ludwig Steinmann, born around 1810 in Hessen-Darmstadt, emigrated to the U.S. in the late 1840's, probably after the death of his father J. Phillip Steinman in 1847. He emigrated with his wife Eva Elisabeth Rettig?. Also with him were his 4-year old son J. Peter Steinmann. This branch of the family changed their name to Stineman. J. Ludwig's wife died in 1857 and he remarried an Ameican, Nancy Wallace, in 1859.
It seems that all of J. Phillip's three sons (J. Phillip, J. Peter and J. Ludwig) emigrated to the U.S. The older sons emigrated in the 1830's. In addition, J. Phillip's wife, the mother of the three sons, Anna Maria Marquardt emigrated and died in 1859. She is buried in Grandview, Iowa in a grave marked "Mother Stineman."
If this is the correct connection, then Andreas, Anja's ancestor, chose not to emigrate, when his father took the younger children with him.
I would very much like to know more about the German family, and especially find the locations of the villages in Germany. Can you help?
