It may prove to be an elusive thread to prove the collateral connection between our ancestral families. But I can give you this general information from history . Heidelberg was the major university which turned out military cadets for Germany military. ( 1846-1850's was Revolution in Germany. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels active among atudents of major universities. ) Many student revolutionaries were given the choice of prison or military service or emigrate to American or Switzerland etc. Perhaps this gives some additional insight into your ancestors possible circumstance.
