Hi Gary,My name is Gene Paul Steiger, born in Dayton, Ohio to Jacob Ralph Steiger and Helen Reese Steiger in 1930. I had two brothers, Robert Leroy (1919-1974) and Jack Raph (1921-1999). My Grandfather, Herbert, had two sons, Herbert and Carl. His father, my great-grandfather, was Jacob Steiger (1823-1906), who married Eva Zerbe. Here is the basic history.
Jacob Steiger (1823-1904) was born in Rohrbach, Germany. His father was Johann Jakob Steiger, also from Rohrbach. Jacob's mother was Gertraude Slauer.Jacob emigrated from Germany in 1846. He had the choice of either immigrating to America, or going to jail for some political problem while attending Heidelberg University. He chose the former.
Jacob settled in Beamsville, Ohio where he married Eva Zerbe, who had been born in Pennsylvania to David Zerbe and Elizabeth Keller.Jacob and Eva had eleven children: Herbert, George Calvin, Sarah Ann, Mary Louise, John William, Levi, Andrew J., Anna Catherine, Oscar, Charles David, and Sabina. He served in the Union army. Jacob Steiger's Union Army service record in a book printed by the 94th Ohio is as follows: “Jacob Steiger, Private 94th Ohio Company C. enrolled Aug. 4,1862, missing on march near Lexington, KY., Sept. 1,1862, was POW Camp Chase, Ohio, returned to duty March 1863. Left sick Sept.1863, mustered out May 18,1865 Nashville, TN.”In the fall of 1863, Jacob served under General Joe Hooker during the siege of Chattanooga, Tennessee. In a spectacular battle, General Hooker’s men made a successful assault on the steep slopes of Lookout Mountain.During this battle, Jacob lost his eyesight. After the war, he had a productive life, and had many children.
The family burial plot is in BEAMSVILLE, OHIO, DARKE COUNTY, which is just outside Greenville, Ohio.
Jacob had elevem children, four of which (Herbert, John William, Andrew J., and Charles David) went to Oklahomain the 1890's for the Cherokee Land Rush. He, along with his brothers got a section of land. The brothers stayed in Oklahoma,Family history is known about about Herbert, Andrew, Charles, and Anna Catherine; however, no information is available about JohnWilliam, Sarah Ann Steiger Fishback, and Mary Louise Steiger Fine, .
