Isham Steger estate was SOUTH of US Route 60, north of Deep Creek, WEST of Route 630, in Powhatan County, VA.
The estate was known as "Ishall".
MAY 2007: The grave is located at the center of 530 acres +/- that is being subdivided. Hopson, LLC purchased the property from Weaver. Ray Avery (Avery VIII, LLC) is a controlling partner.
I looked at the proposed Subdivision Plat at Powhatan Zoning office. The Cemetery (which has the grave PLUS the remains of the house) will at least have a 20 foot access easement, BUT may actually abut one of the new roads.
In short, this will be much more accessible.
In 1962, Luther Harry STEGER of Sydney, Australia recorded a deed & plat with Chesapeake Corporation. The plat laid out a 10 foot Right-of-Way (R/W) along an existing Wood Road from the southern terminus of a wood road (that runs through Lorenzo Morris, May 2007- to US Rt 60) south to the grave site. The grave "area" was shown as 210 ft X 210 ft & showed "ruins of old home foundation" and "Grave of Isham Steger". The deed was recorded in Powhatan in Deed Book 76, page 401 (76/401). The plat was originally recorded in Plat Book 7, page 38 (PB7/38), but has been moved now to Plat Cabinet B, slide 120 (PC-B/120).
On the 1880 LaPrade Map of Powhatan, this area is shown as conatining HOBSON, BROWN, STEGER, & "Walnut Shades", all north of Deep Creek, south of the Cumberland Courthouse Road (roughly current US Rt 60).
Another STEGER property is shown east of this area, on the north-side of the CH Road, at the WESTRN terminus of "Mosby branch" of Deep Creek.
A third STEGER place is noted NE of this area, EAST of Sallees Creek, NE of Bel Nemus (the Brazure Cocke estate), on "Stegers Creek".
