I have copies of three real estate transactions in Tyrrell County (the land is in current Washington County) for a John Stealey/Stealy/Stely. All deeds refer to the land west of Middle Neck Swamp. 1) In 1749, he bought 50 acres of land from Stevens Lee (Book 2:35). 2) In 1763, he sold 10 of those acres to William Newbold (Book 4, Vol. 1:300). 3) In 1765, he sold the remaining 40 acres, including his "house and plantation" to Jesse Young (Book 4, Vol. 1: 464). In the third deed, it includes John's wife's name. Unfortunately, her name only appears once and the last few letters were written over so it is difficult to tell which was the original name and which was the corrected name. What is clear is that the first and second letters are "N" and "i". The third could be an "e" or "c". The rest is a combination of letters. Her name could have been Nicely or Niela or Nielly. It appears that the recorder either did not know how to spell the name given or tried to correct the last few letters by writing over what he originally recorded. (John signed his mark in both sale transactions.) Could there have been 2 Nicey Steeleys. A Nicey Steeley by marriage and a daughter or granddaughter? If John married Nicey circa 1763 (as per Holly Hofmann), his sale of ten acres (to William Newbold) might have been to her father as dowry or to raise money for/as the dowry. This would also explain why her name was not mentioned in the 1763 sale but was in the 1765 sale. I would appreciate any additional information anyone can share on this John. I'm trying to connect him to the other south shore Steely/Steeley/Stealys. Thanks. Notify Administrator about this message?
