1913 photo of Pastor Frederic Todd Steele

I purchased the subject studio portrait yesterday at the Oakland Museum Women's Board White Elephant Sale in Alameda, CA. The photo was taken by The Jeanette Studio, 1077 Broadway, Brooklyn, NY. Written on the back in pencil is the following:

"To Alice From Pastor Steele
Mt Olivet
March 23th 1913."

Thus, I assume the man in the photo is Pastor Steele. I found this individual recorded in the 1900 and 1910 Census data for Brooklyn Ward 28, New York City, Kings Co., NY, and in a U.S. Passport Applications, 1795-1925, database. He was born on 19 January 1871 in Rossville, IL.

Frederic's father, William Newton Steele, who was also a clergyman, was born Abt. 1825 in Owen Co., IN, and died on 7 January 1918 in New York City. Frederic's siblings included sister Lizzie L. Steele, born in September 1856 in IN, and brother Charles N. Steele, born in IL in April 1873.

Frederic was single at the time of the 1900 and 1910 Census enumerations, and he was living with his widowed father and sibling(s). On 1 June 1900, they resided at 1224? Greene Ave., Borough of Brooklyn, NY, and on 25 April 1910, they resided at 84 Grove St., Brooklyn, NY.

An obituary note published in "The New York Times" on 29 July 1909 reads as follows:

"CHARLES N. STEELE, a son of the Rev. W. N. Steele, died at his home, 84 Grove Street, Brooklyn, yesterday. He was a salesman. Mr. Steele was a brother of the Rev. Frederick [sic] T. Steele, pastor of the Mount Olivet Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn."

On 24 August 1918, Frederic applied for a U.S. passport, stating his intention to visit Great Britain and France to conduct YMCA work, planning to depart in September 1918.
