Martha Jane Tankersley-Steele's parents identified
I just located an obituary for Elizabeth Tankersley that may answer some questions regarding Martha Tankersley & Legvi Steele. The obit was in the Terrell (TX) Daily Tribune, March 23, 1923, and reads as follows.I have added my comments afterwards and welcome any comments or questions.
Mrs. Elizabeth Tankersley, wife of C. D. Tankersley died this morning on East High Street at age 71 years. She was a native of Alabama, born in 1852.She is survived by a husband, sons and daughters, W. A. Tankersley of Nashville, Arkansas, J. R. Tankersley of Denton, A. J. Tankersley of Quinlan, C. L. Tankersley of Terrell and C. C. Tankersely of Winchester Tennessee, two sisters, Mrs. L. A. Calendar and Mrs. H. W. Sturgeon of Red Water, Texas, Mrs. Mary Miller of Snyder, Texas, Miss Ruthie Tankersley of Colorado, Texas, Mrs. Martha Steel and Mrs. Rene Miller of Winchester, Tennessee and Mrs. Alice Pruitt of Elere, Tennessee. She was a member of the Church of Christ.Interment in Oakland Cemetery.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Gideon Gifford. Her husband was Charles Daniel, son of Bennett Tankersley. The children mentioned in the obituary are:
William Abraham
John Riley
Aaron Jethro
Chalres L
Charles Cicero
Mrs. L. A. Calender is my grandmother, and is not a sister, but a daughter (Maggie S.)
Mrs. H. W. Sturgeon is also not a sister, but a daughter (Tilde)
Mary Miller is Mary Elizabeth, another daughter
Ruthie Tankersley is also a daughter, who later married Benjamin Terroll Tankersley.
Martha Steel must be Martha Jane Tankersley, who married Levi Steel. My grandmother had a photograph of Martha's son, Barney, and I always thought this Martha was her sister, but this is the only "proof" that I have found.
That would leave Rene Miller and Alice Pruitt to be Elizabeth's sisters if the comments in the obituary are correct.I have a letter from Cicero to Tilde which mentions a Rene and an Alice (among others). My grandmother also had a photograph of the tombstone of Alice M. & Finley Pruitt.(Alice b. 3.29.1879/d. 3.21.1923; Finley b. 12.1.1861/d. 10.23.1942)There is a Rena & J. Lee Miller listed on the 1910 Franklin TN census who live 2 doors down from Cicero. It shows she was born about 1875.I wonder if this could be "Rene?"
