Ambrose Steele of N.C. 1724, Who was he?
The will of Ambrose Steele, dated 1724 is found in the Will records of Beaufort Co.,North Carolina. According to the abstract of the Will: "He left land in the town of Freehold,East New Jersey in the Co. of Monmouth to his son, Ambrose. Wife: Rebeckah. Land at Neuse leased of Cullen Pollock ordered sold. Executors: William Little, Cornelius Fowler and Edward Salter. Witnesses: William Little, Deborah Pilson, J. Stoner and Thomas Unday. Codicil witnessed by J. Stoner, Deborah Pilson and William Bevan. Clerk of the Court: John Swann. Justice Thomas Boyd."
I'm quite sure the William Little referred to in the Will is the same William Little, who appears on the Will of Allen Simpson, who died 1754 in Londonderry Twsp. Chester Co. PA.
In trying to find out who my 3rd great grandmother Sarah, who was the widow of Robert Simpson, who died in 1782 in Campbell Co., VA, I have taken a lot of different routes by researching the people listed in Robert Simpson's will.
There is Owen Franklin, James Campbell, William Simpson, James Dixon, James and William Dunwoody. My research tells me that all of these people are related in some manner, but trying to find the ancestral link that ties them altogether was difficult, but I think I have found it, it is the Steele family. All of these men are related to or have married Steeles. Now, later on, my Simpsons settled in Mercer Co., KY as did some of the Steeles.
A lot of you are researching in Bedford Co., VA on the Steeles there. I believe Sarah Steele Simpson, was the widow of Robert Simpson and that she came into KY in about 1787 and settled near her son, Robert Simpson II in Mercer Co.
She then married Thomas Smithey, Rev. War vet. He is buried in New Providence Cemetery, which is out of Harrodsburg, Mercer Co.,KY.
I hope some of this has "peaked" your interest and that some of you may have some of the information I need.
Thanks very much,
Bonnie Simpson Valko
