James Harvey STEELE
James Harvey STEELE only son of Elmore and Esther Steele, was born near Williamsport, Warren County, Indiana, 15 November 1845. He died at his home in Jamestown, 29 January 1911. Age 65 years 2 months and 14 days.
His early boyhood days were spent in Lebanon, Indiana, where his mother moved shortly after the death of her husband and while her son was young. As soon as he was able to make his way in the world he came to Jamestown and was employed in the woolen mills, owned by Mr. Samuel Lewis and with whom he lived and for whom he worked for several years. He enlisted in the Civil War and was mustered in an honorably discharged at it’s close. He was married to Sarah A. Cox, 27 November 1874. To this union three children were born; Cecil, Nettie and Mary. Mary died at the age of 18 months. His wife, only sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Perkins survive him. He was one of the oldest living members of both branches of the I.O.O.F. lodge in Jamestown.
A friend of the poor, he gave to charity without stint or display and in his daily life exemplied his inherent-honesty, probity and rectitude.
In his passing, the community looses a good citizen, his lodge a loyal member and the poor a stanch support.
Under the guise of a gruff exterior, he had a kindly heart, and a affection for his friends and fellowmen.
Let us hope that it may as be truthfully said of us, as of him, that-
“His life wad gentle; and the elements so mixed to him that nature could stand up and say to all the world, “This was a man’”.
