I have the same line of decent. I have looked at the family and it is quite obvious they used the English naming system. The first born being named after John's father. I feel we are looking for a William Steel/e born about 1740. I have not found a William in Virginia born around that date. They were in Bedford Co. VA. originally before they moved to St. Claire, IL. William Steel/e may have come in from MD. Like my surname of Congrove-Congreve did. There were a lot of planters came in from MD about that time. we may find him there or he came direct from UK or other colonies. If he came from other colonies. I have dound no passenger records. I have found William Steel/e on a prison ship. I am hoping that was not him. But it would explain the lack of records. He may have died in indentureship. I hope this helps.
