We are looking for information on Robert Steel and Janet (Turnbull) Steel of Woodend, New Monkland, Scotland, their parents and their siblings. Robert and Janet had eight children, all born at Woodend. The 1st was a female, b. 1799, that probably died in infancy; the 2nd was Robert Steel, b. Nov. 13, 1800; the 3rd was Jean Steel, b. Aug. 15, 1802; the 4th was William Steel, b. Aug. 14, 1804; the 5th was Matthew Steel, b. July 22, 1808, and died young; the 6th was Janet Steel, b. April 3, 1811; the 7th was Matthew Steel, b. Oct. 1, 1813; and the 8th was Agnes Steel, b. Sept. 8, 1815. Matthew Steel, the 7th child, was my great, great grandfather, was married first to Margaret Young Wilson and had a son, William Steel, b. April 10, 1838, Glasgow, Scotland. Matthew and Margaret came to America in about 1860 and Margaret died in 1861 and was buried in Peacham, Vermont cemetery. Matthew married second Lillias Riddle Calderwood in Greensboro, Vermont, June 22, 1862, and had eleven children that we have information for. We would appreciate any additional information on Matthew’s siblings: Robert, Jean, William, Janet, and Agnes.
