Does anyone have any information on these STEEL'S? Lore has it that Talitha was adopted by Richard and Mary STEEL and she was a full Cherokee. So far I have found nothing to prove this. Have even found information to the effect that there were not any Indians in the area by 1860, true?
Known is: Talitha born 1862/63 Russell Co., Va d/o Richard & Mary STEEL, married Mathias Jeptha CASEY 6 Dec 1879, Russell Co., Va. So Talitha should have been found in the 1870 Census with Richard and Mary. I did find a Richard 46, Mary 33 with a dau. Aby 8 in Buchanan Co, Va. Being Talitha married at 16 in 1879, this could be her under a nick name, there were other children listed also. I found in the Russell County Marriage Index a Richard STEEL m. Mary E. KATRON 24 Oct 1864 by Paris Robinette, if this is the right Richard and Mary two of the children listed in the 1870 Census could not be theirs, Aby 8 and Barby 6 (Barby could on a slide) Nancy 4 and Thomas 1 would be. In the 1880 Census this family is in Elk Garden, Russell Co., Va., page 16-17, Aby is gone but the other 3 children plus Mary J. are there. I found Talitha 16 and M. J. CASEY 21 under HESS in the 1880 Elk Garden, Russell Co., Va Census, page 9, have no idea why they and Mathias' brother Patton and family were listed under HESS with CASEY in parenthesis.
Also found on Richard STEEL: Russell County Marriage Index, Richard STEEL m Celia DRAKE 28 May 1844. 1850 Census Western District, Tazewell Co., VA., Rich Steel 28, Cela 23, James 10 (this should be the same Richard Steel, James must be his brother or a family member) 1860 Census, Western District, Tazewell Co., Va under Edmond Steel 45, Phebe 40, Patton 6 is Richard 35 and Calvin 30 (brothers?), Cela must have died? This Richard is not found in Tazewell Co. Census again. Believe the Russell Co. Richard Steel and this one is the same.
Any information on this family would be a big welcome help. Thanks.
