North Carolina Steed's

My family of steeds are from the North carolina area. My father recently died, Herman J. Steed. His name came from his grandfather from what i know who was Alvin Steed. The problem i run into along with many other African-Americans is that the name Steed was given, but question is by who? At one point it was thought that the family recieved the name from England which I believe the Steed name is derieved. If anyone could shed some light on this subject please comment. as i said before my fathers name was Herman J. Steed, his grandfather Alvin Steed from Henderson, North Carolina
