If you've not done so, you might get a copy of Robert's death certificate which "should" verify parents for you. Looks like the certificate was issued as "Robt.Steadman"-died June 3,1922 in Vermilion County? Certificate #0920326
Copies can be had either from IL vital records or the county--county is usually faster and cheaper!

You might also obtain a copy of the marriage record of Robert and Martha-May 17,1881-those sometimes have parents names on the them as well. (Otherwise, they are just cool to have!)

Looks like Elizabeth Stedman died Feb.25,1878 in Chicago; in the 1880 census, Robert lives in a boarding house,is widowed, and works as an engineer. Their son Edgar, born Sept.1,1875; he married Augusta Pasha or Pashe on Apr.7,1897 in Vermilion County;she born May 1879 in Germany;they had children William,Leona or Leone,Russel,Donald,Mildred and Marjorie.

Based on age,Robert born about 1849?- I wonder:
1851 census,St.Paul,Deptford,Kent,England
Stedman,John Jas.-age 33,born Buckhurst,Hampshire, works in civil service in some capacity in "customs" that I can not read clearly.
wife-Ann,age 30,born Kent,Gillingham
son-John Jas.-age 9,born Kent,Deptford
daughter-Mary Ann-age 5,born Surrey,St.George
daughter-Isabella,age 3,also born Surrey,St.George
son-Robert,age 1,born Kent,Gravesend

in 1861,this family is in St.James,Bermondsey,Surrey
John,age 43,and he now a "pensioner,H.M.Customs"
wife Ann is 41.
daughter Elizabeth 15,son Robert 11, and son Charles age 6 who was born in Surrey,Bermondsey.
(This year would make "Elizabeth","Mary Ann" in 1851--folks had a tricky habit of changing names, using middle names....)

US census indicates that Robert immigrated in 1868 or there abouts--dates vary, but census records are not terribly correct much of the time.
