I would like to contact Paul Van Olson and others who are working on this family. George Steadman, Jr., 1793-1881, was born in England and settled in Canada in 1832 per his land petition. George was the son of George Stedman, who died 1804. George reported in his Canadian land petition that his father served on Lovling's Surveying Brig and on the fire ship, Black Lake, in England. Who was George Stedman's wife and did they have other children? George, Jr., was married three times. His first wife was Sarah or Marie Jane Briton/Britton, daughter of William Britton, and they had 4 sons, including Isaac, who was reportedly a "sea captain" on the Great Lakes, and George (III) who married Mary Jane Ransom, daughter of William and Harriet Ransom, in Simcoe County, Ontario. The name of his second wife is unknown. Their daughter, Ann, married John Hemstock in Canada. George, his third wife, Geneva (Jane) Wilton, 1800-1898, and his children settled in Ontario, Canada in 1832 and they were living in Grey County, Ontario by the 1840's. George and Geneva (Jane)moved by covered wagon and oxen to Union County in the Dakota Territory (now South Dakota) about 1869-1870. They had eight children, all of whom were born in Canada: Maurice Steadman, 1834-1910, married Elizabeth Jane Carson; Anthony Steadman married Frances Hemstock; Elizabeth Jane Steadman married William Hemstock; Mary Jane Steadman, married Robert Holmes; John Steadman married Ernestena Behnke, daughter of Gottlieb and Minnie Behnke; William Steadman, 1846-1870, married Mary Morden, daughter of Caleb and Mary Morden of Grey County, Ontario; Sarah Jane Steadman married Alfred Hemstock; and Samuel, 1849 - 1927. Would appreciate exchanging information on these families. Notify Administrator about this message?
