Cat, I may have contacted you before but can't remember as it is a long time since you posted your message. Hope you are still there. "The Antiquities of Nottinghamshire" by Robert Thoroton, first published in 1677, contains a reference to this marriage. Margaret Staunton was the sole heir of her father and brother. She married Ralph Shirley Esq. in 1423. Margaret's parents were John de Staunton and Joan, the daughter and co-heir of Sir Ralph Meignell, of Langley Meignell in the County of Derby. John was the first husband of Joan. John died in 1422 and she married Sir Thomas Clinton. Joan died 1457. There is a pedigree of the Shirleys in "The History and Antiquities of the County of Leicester" Vol.III, Pt.II, by John Nicholson, first published in 1797. This shows Margaret Staunton as Ralph Shirley's first wife. Only one son, John, is recorded. He inherited Staunton Harold from his mother. Ralph had two other wives, his second wife bearing him one son and five daughters. Ralph's parents were Sir Ralph Shirley (1391-1443) and Joan, the daughter and sole heir of Thomas Basset of Braylesford, Derbyshire. Thoroton traces the Staunton/de Staunton family back to the 1100s. Hope this may be of interest. Notify Administrator about this message?
