I have learned from my mother that Staten is spelled in different ways due to the cenus takers. Here are the examples of the different spellings: Staten, Staton, and Stayton. The reason that I know this is because they have spelled my mother's father's name all three ways. So it makes it hard to find names when you are looking. I hope that this helps you.
