In 1832 Jacob Starnes made a pension application based on his Revolutionary War Service. In response to questions he states

I was once in a company of four in the year 1779. About 7th over on a water course in Virginia back of the Settlements towards Boonesboro where we were fired on by about 25 or 30 Indians and my father, my uncle Frederick Starns and brother in law – Michael Moyer were shot and I made my escape although they were on me upwards of a mile& kept firing on me but I made my escape in the Cain [sic, cane] and other undergrowth we went back to Boonesboro & he sent him out, along with others to receive some prisoners & take them on to a place called the Town House on Holston River. Jacob's father is identified by Emory Hamilton's Indian Atrocity series, as also named Jacob Starnes.

Jacob's "uncle Frederick" is often said to be Frederick Starnes who settled on the New River as early as 1743. Those researching him give his DOB as c1700, and identify his wife as Mary Goldman.

A Frederick Starnes made his will dated 22 August 1778, recorded in Wasington County 18 May 1779. (Kegley, 1982:238. This is consistent with Jacob Starnes pension application, and it is clear that "Undcle Frederick" is the Frederick Starnes who made his will in 1778. That will identifies two children Daniel and Jacob, and wife Mary. That seems to be consistent with the idea that "Uncle Frederick" is the Frederick Starnes who settled on the New River c. 1743, whose wife is identified as Mary Goldman.

However, I have some questions about this. Current research identifies this Frederick Starnes as having been born in Germany in 1700. If that is true then he would have been 79 years of age when killed "in Virginia back of the Settlements towards Boonesboro". That's a bit old to be out scouting for Indians. It seems much more likely that "Uncle Frederick" was a much younger man. Possibly he was the Frederick Starnes Junior, who also settled on the New River about the time Frederick Starnes Senior settled there.

If that's the case, then perhaps the Mary mentioned in his will is Mary Goldman.

Can anyone point to any data that helps clarify this?
