My father's father's father was John Wesley Starling near Portland, Maine. This is not the same John W. Starling you are searching for, as far as I know.

[O.T: My name is also John Wesley Starling so with the birth announcement my grandfather assumed I was named after his father. This surprised my parents because I was named after my other grandfather, John Arthur Hanson, Portland, ME. My father, Wesley Whitten Starling (1921), was named after his grandfather "Wesley" and always assumed Wesley was his first name.]

My line of Starling's goes back to Monmouth Island. This line includes Josiah Starling and Mary Trefetheren.

There is a mystery in this area regarding one large family which changed its name between Starling and Sterling. I forget the detail. One ancestor there was the sea captain with a fleet clipper ships who had received much of Monmouth Island as a wedding present from the bride's father.

My father has some good documents and notes for me. I'll reference them or get some keyed if there is interest.
