Looking for any Source that will prove who the father of Nehemiah Stanbrough could possible be; Research Notes of William B.Dulaney,Stansbury Society Newletter Summer 1983 Josiah Stanbrough, son of John and Martha Stanbrough, was born 1685-1694 (before 1704) at Southampton, Suffolk Co. NY He lived at Suffolk Co. and inherited his father's land in East New Jersey. He was a Freeholder in Newport, RI , in 1734 and is later found in Charleston, SC, in 1736/38. He died 4 May 1738 at Charleston and is probably buried in St. Phillip's Churchyard where his death is found. He married a wife unk. The following issue According to Mr. Dulaney is not fully documented. Fleet b/ 1716 ( a guess ) Solomon b/1720 m/ Mary Price He died and left will Morristown, NJ, dated 29 Nov 1749(Bk. WB-E pg.468) Sarah b/1729 named in brother Solomon's will 1749 Josiah b/1729 Elizabeth b/1737 Nehemiah b/ 1739, Named in brother Solomon's will 1749 (Mr. Dulaney and others feel that Nehemiah is the probable father of their ancestor, Ezekiel ) Ichabod b/1738 Hobart b/ 1713 (a guess ) Supplements notes of William H. Dulaney Two children attributed to Josiah Stanbrough who died in South Carolina are based on clues-Fleet and Hobart.Fleets and Hobarts and Josiah Stanbrough are found in The Rate Lists of Long Island, 1675, 1683 Respectively. Noting Josiah's Residence in Newport, RI, before moving to South Carolina. An Elizabeth Marshall b/ 1713 d/ 1782 m 1st. Fleet Stanbrough and 2nd. Samuel Greene, by latter she had a son, Fleet Stanbrough Greene, b/1753(Newport Records-cited in Greene Family of Rhode Island. Finally, a Fleet Stanbrough is found in records of St. Phillips and St. Helene's, Charleston, SC strongly suggesting a relationship with Josiah. Fleet was b/ 1716 and died in Charleston, SC. Ref; possible son, Hobart, ----A Hobart Stanbrough witnessed will of Benjamin Webb, 1734 in Charleston, S.C., also Josiah Stanbrough witnessed will of Manley Williamson, 1735 in Charleston (Abstracts of SC Wills, 1670-1740), Will Bk.1732-37 Nehemiah Stanbrough belived to be the son of Josiah who settled in Charleston, was born 1736. He is thought to have an unknown first wife and had Ezekiel Stanbrough b/ 1759 (ancestor of Mr. Dulaney.) Nehemiah is known to have married Mary Minthorn on 14 Aug. 1764 at First Presbyterian Church, Morristown NJ and had issue; Jemiah, Solomon, William, Mary, Sarah, Nehemiah, Jr. Ezekiel, Solomon and William are associated with Greene Co. Tennessee as if brothers, Also we find the following marriages in Frederick Co. VA Ezekiel Stansbury and Esther Kramer- 19 Aug 1788 Mary Stansbury and Thomas Carter- 1 Nov 1794 Sarah Stansbury and George LaFollette- 29 June 1797 Jemimah Stansbury and James Pearson-26 Aug 1789 The names Ezekiel, Mary Sarah and Jemimah are likewise names found among the children of Nehemiah, However it has been suggested that Mary , above could have been Mary Minthorn Stansbury, possibly by then a widow of Nehemiah. The time frame is certainly right for these Stansburys to have been a part of the family of Nehemiah, en route from New Jersey to Tennessee. Nehemiah could have died in NJ or Virginia, but the name Nehemiah shows up among the children of Solomon of Tennessee. *************************************************************************** My Comments on above research; It appears to me that Mr. Dulaney is simple guessing that Josiah was the father to Nehemiah with no real sources. He list the Tax Rate list of Long Island but this was before Josiah was born, so this could not be Josiah, son of John Stanbrough. In ref to Hobart Stanbrough in an Abstract dated June 1712 Town of East Hampton Bk. G. page 71 1/2 Know ye that we Margaret Sylvester widow and HOBART STANBROUGH, Mariner, both of Newport in the Colony of Rhode Island and providence plantation, Heirs to the estate of Capt. Josiah Hobart lately deceased in Easthampton in the County of Sulfolk and the Colony of New York, for and in Consideration of the sum of Thirty pounds current money in hand paid by Ebenezer White of Bridgehampton in the County of Sulfolk, have granted and sold unto the said White and his heais for ever one third part of four teenths of one whole share thoughtout Meantaukes, To have and to hold the same and doth warrent the sale to be good and lawful. In witness whereof we here unto set our hands and seals the twenty third day of June 1712. Margaret Sulvester Hobart Stanbrough In presence of Cornelius Conking, Thomas Matthews Acknowledged same day before John Mulford In Shelter Island and Its Presbyterian Church pg 38 Comes this; About 1698 National Syvester the 2nd sold 1000 acres to Geo Havens, After disposing of this land the said Nation Syvester having married Miss Margaret Hobart, daughter of Isaiah Hobart, of East Hampton moved his family to New Port R.I. (Margaret Hobart Sylvester must have been the niece to Josiah Hobart but how is Hobart Stanbrough related possible a grandson, but this Hobart was born before 1712 as early as 1691 so I don;t think he was a son of Josiah Stanbrough. Dulaney make ref that Nehemiah had first unknown wife, but has no ref to why he thinks this and there are no other marriages records for Nehemiah. He also has no Source for the age of Ezekiel, and per census records Esther Kramer was 50-60 in 1830 make her birth 1770-1780 If we are to believe that Ezekiel birth was 1759--- had he lived he would have been 71 in 1830. I DON'T THINK HE WAS THIS OLD. It appear to me that the Josiah Stanbrough that died in Charleston was not the son of John Stanbrough. Is possible that he was in Rhode Island and had sons Fleet and Hobart but they are not related to Nehemiah. However, I think that Nehemiah's mother was a Hobart, and that Hehemiah father was a Josiah but not the Josiah that died in Charleston. These are the most proven issue of the parents of Nehemiah Nehemiah, Solomon, Sarah, Josiah, Elizabeth, Ichabad And these are the proven issue of Nehemiah and Mary Jerimah, Mary, Sarah, Solomon, William, Ezekiel, Nehemiah, Jr., and Rachel Notify Administrator about this message?
