Hi Jonathan, I come from one of the groups of stangers in Australia. I believe I am 6th generation Australian. The extent of my families history is this: Family came from aukney islands into England (probably of Viking decent) and migrated out of England. My family moved west from Sydney, destination unknown? Three generations ago three stanger brothers settled on a farm near Nimbin in northern NSW and ran a saw mill. The family spread around the far north coast of NSW and I am now in Sydney. There are apparently several areas where stanger families have spread in NSW. One near Bathurst and one near Gunnadar. I have met a few stangers in Sydney from the Bathurst mob who are directly related several generations ago i.e. our great grand fathers were cousins. If anyone has more details re: stangers in Australia I would love to know more. I would also like to know more about the origin of the family name and what area it originally came from. I believe there is a fiord in Norway called some thing like Stavanger, there is a town called stanger and a well known electrical engineering company from norway is stanger. Oh, I just did a web search and found this: The name, "Stanger", originates from a Viking Pirate from Stavanger, Norway, whose descendants were the "Stanger" family from England. Dr William Stanger, after who the town of Stanger is named, was the first Surveyor General of Natal. PS, does anyone host a website on stangers and collate information on them? I might be interested in doing that? Especially for Austraian Stangers. Cheers, Jeff Stanger www.jeffstanger.net Notify Administrator about this message?
