My great grandfather Lorene Thorn was married to a Martha Stanger and they lived in Whythe County, Virgina. They had a son named Samuel who served in the Spanish American War as described below.

I am searching for pre Spanish American War information on my maternal family (Thorn). My grandfather was Samuel B. Thorn who served in the 2nd Virginia Volunteer Infantry in the Spanish American War. His father was Lorene, Lorraine, or Lorain Thorn. A Lorain Thorn served in the 36th Virginia Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War enlisting from nearby Giles County, Virginia, who may or may not have been Samuel's father. Does anyone have any information on either this, or even the origin of the Thorn family in the Southwestern Virginia mountains? Many thanks, David

The Stangers served in the Confederate Volunteer Infantry Regiments during the Civil War as did the Thorns.

Any information you might have would be appreciated. Many thanks,

David
