Hello, I am working on the Bruton family of Dobbs (now Lenoir)County in eastern NC. In an effort to decipher who was who among those colonial-era Brutons, I am doing a land platting exercise to see how the property changed hands among the Brutons, to try to establish family relationships. In one of the Brutons' original land patents, one to William Bruton in 1757, one of the adjoining neighbors was Joshua Standley. Joshua later sold property to Benjamin Bruton, but I don't know if it's the same property that was adjoining William Bruton, since Dobbs is a burned county and only the index to the deeds remains. In any case, the matriarch of my Brutons, Isabella Bruton, later moved as a widow to Orangeburgh District, South Carolina (she lived just south of the S. Edisto River, an area that later became Barnwell District). She remarried there but was almost immediately widowed a second time. She obtained property on September 23, 1791, as "Isabella Askew" in Orangeburgh District; one of her adjoining neighbors was a Joshua Standley. I feel certain that it must be the same man as the Bruton neighbor back in Dobbs County, so am beginning research on him to see if there is any information on my Brutons. Does anyone know of Joshua Standley, or come across the Brutons in their research? Any info. would be appreciated! Cordially, Brian Nilsson BHNilsson@aol.com Notify Administrator about this message?
