Hello Debra, I know the James Standish you are looking for. He is the Brother to my GG Grandfther Miles Standish
I know James married Mercy but I don't know when and where. I know that James shows up in the 1920 Federal Census in Manhattan with his daughter and her second husband but is not in the 1930 Census so I assume he had died.
The James ,Miles and their Uncle Winslow Brewster Standish all joined the Union Army at the same time. Winslow came to live with the parents of Miles and James in 1849 after both his parents Joshua and Mary (shaw) died. Joshua died in 1846 and Mary in 1849.
I have James and Lizzie having a daughter named Ida, she was born in 1870.
I don't know where you live but if you live near Boston Massachusetts you can go to the Massachusetts state Archives in Dorchester and look up the Vital records that you are looking for. They have them from 1850 until 1915. They lsit all birth, marraige and death records for every town in the state during that time period.
Let me if I could help you in your search.
Mark
