The information I have states that the "steel coat" was actually a metal type, sleeveless jacket worn by the men in the region who were considered soldiers, of sorts; as early on it was a Swedish colony, they would've had some type of militia? Don't know much about that period in that area, but my information came from a book on that family with historical data to support it. I saw the book at the TN State Library and Archives (several Stalcup/Bracken descendants migrated down the eastern seaboard into NC, then into, esp. Sumner Co. TN)
