I don't think we're talking about the same John F. Stairs.
The fellow I researched was born in Halifax in 1848 and died in Toronto in 1904.
He is buried in Fairview Cemetary in Halifax.
He had two wives, Charlotte Jane Fogo, who died of Scarlet Fever, and Helen Bell, who lived to be 99 and was a friend of Lord Beaverbrook.
He had an uncle John, who had a son named William Grant Stairs - the African Explorer.
He also had a son named James Alfred who lived from 1876 to 1958.
John F. was present at the start of the Civil War in 1861 - he would have been 13.
I wrote a book about the Halifax Stairs family a few years ago. it's called Merchant Princes: Halifax's First Family of Finance, Ships and Steel.
You can download it on Google Books or order one through Amazon.com
