William Staines

I'm looking for any information on a William Staines. He came to Texas and had land near Galveston in 1840 (Texas Land Office Records) He married Anna Mariah Smith in the 1850's. He served in the Confederacy and was killed in Louisiana in 1863 or '64. This was my great grandfather.
The family changed the name to STINES after the war. My grand father, William James Stines talked about having to take over as head of the house since his father was "killed in the last war". According to family stories, Staines came from England and first landed in New York, from there he came to Texas. Any information would be appreciated.
