Hi Jan, I think we are related. Your Genforum site and the information on it was passed on to me by a fellow Stagg, although we have not been able to discover how or if we are related. I have a great grand mother named Elizabeth Ann (or Annie) Stagg, who is almost certainly an older sister of your John. I do not have any knowledge of any other siblings. Earlier this year I went to the county records office in Trowbridge - Wiltshire to trawl through their records hoping to find out as much as I could about anybody with the name Stagg. I hoped I could identify members of that branch of my family and so work backwards. In so doing I found the baptismal records of my Elizabeth and a John, both born in Burbage and with the parents Edward and Harriet Stagg. I have not been able to find a birth certificate for Elizabeth, and have not seriously tried for her brother. I have obtained a copy of Edward and Harriet’s wedding certificate. It records that John was aged 21, a labourer and the son of John Stagg, a labourer. Harriet was 20 and the daughter of Henry Spackman Eagle, a shoemaker. From another source, I have Henry’s wife as being a Sophia. Both being born about 1796. However, ages given on wedding and census documents are often incorrect, so ages must be treated with caution if not suspicion in my opinion. I hope this is of some use to you. If you agree with me that we are descendants of Edward and Harriet, I may be able to give you some more information, not too much at this stage, but more as my research progresses.
