Dear Mike:
Thanks for pointing out that Nicholas M. Baker used the same birth date for Ralph Eaton Stafford as for Ralph K. Stafford.Obviously an error. Also MANY thanks for sending the Register Report for Ralph K.You have some fabulous information that my sources have not provided me.
Since I sent the 1860 Census for Ralph E. Stafford, I thought perhaps the 1860 Census for Ralph K. Stafford would be informative vis-a-vis the question of the former's 1839 death date, which I have brought into question. These two records clearly show which Ralph is which.
"<7>CENSUS: 1860 U.S. Census, Staffordsville, Giles Co, VA; 1860; p 791, line 38, Dwelling #170/Family #155, enum 26 Jun 1860; Seattle [WA] Public Library, M653, Roll 1345; NOTE: ***RALPH K. STAFFORD, age 68, b VA, Farmer, Real Estate=$23,000, Personal Estate=$2,630; Mary, age 51, b VA; Demarcus, age 24, b VA, Farm Laborer; Marion, age 21, b VA, Farm Laborer; Jane, age 18, b VA, Domestic; James, age 15, b VA, Farm Laborer; Almira, age 10, b VA"
Given the 1835 marriage date for R.K.S. and Mary Terpin, and the ages of the children reported on the 1860 Census, it seems apparent that these 5 children are a product of this marriage.
I have been bothered by the R.E.S. 1839 death date for years, and searched the North Carolina Census records for any trace of Ralph and Susanna Stafford.I found none, and then came across them in the 1850-1860 VA Census records.
Also, Ralph Stafford, b 1775, who married Catherine Saylor, and lived in Miami Co., Ohio, has an 1839 death date.See below.
"<1>BIRTH-PARENTS-SPOUSE-CHILDREN-DEATH:Annabel D. "Catharine wife of RALPH STAFFORD died 19 Jan 1853, age 69yrs.8mo. 3da. [b 16 May 1783]
***RALPH STAFFORD died 31 Jul 1839(?) in the 64 yr. of his age" [thus, b 1774-1775]"
I have thought that perhaps the "Ohio" Ralph was mixed up with the "Virginia" Ralph.
Would you be so kind as to give me your source for the 1839 death date.I know it is the generally accepted date, but I find the 1850-1860 Census records to be rather compelling.Again, I look forward to your feedback.
