There are references to H.V. Bagot in Colonel
T.Y. Wright's autobiography 'Ceylon in My Time' published 1950. He lists the names of the 62 members sworn in when the Ceylon Mounted Infantry was formed in 1892 by Colonel Gordon-Reeves.H.V. Bagot is member no
36 and listed as a Trooper. There are two chapters of the book on Volunteering and on
the Infantry's participation in the South
African War.Elsewhere in the book is a reference to Bagot's stay at Arapolakanda
Estate and the shooting range there.
The Times of Ceylon Green Book 1941 lists
the name of S.H. Bagot as Range Forest officer, Diyatalawa and Lieut Qtr Master of the C.L.I.
Vama Vamadevan author of the book 'The Ceylon
We Knew' 1995 says that Hubert Bagot was officer in charge of the Police Mounted Division. He was a bachelor and died some 20
years ago. Vama who was himself in the police
could give more information on Hubert Bagot.
Please let me know if you want his contact address in Sydney, and also if you wish to
have extracts from Wright's book.
