I read your message on genealogy.com re your search for information on
Welatantrige Anthony Shirley Boteju. My Grandfather's name was Welatantrige Reginald Peter
Boteju (1901-1998), there's a chance that he was related to Welatantrige Richard Boteju. I'll ask my father
if he can shed any light on the matter. As far as I'm aware the Welatantrige Boteju's hail from
the Kotte region in Sri Lanka. Boteju is a very uncommon name in Sri Lanka, and Welatantrige (the 'ge'
or clan name) is even more uncommon. My sister did some research on the origins of the name 'Boteju'
and we belive it's derived from either one of two Portuguese names -Kuveju, or Botelho. There is a variation of the
surname Boteju, spelt with an 'e' (ie Botejue), and also a variation of the 'ge' name (Wahalatantrige) however
I recall elderly relatives telling me that those people are unrelated, or from a lower caste. Anyways,
I'lll get back to you. I'll on;ly be using this address until 31/05/2001, if you want to contact me after then my address
is 2/111, Botany Street, Randwick,2031, NSW, Australia, phone number -02-9326-4012.
