Hi, for what it's worth I knew a Burgher by the name of Charles de Vos who lived in Galle Fort, Southern Sri Lanka, when I was teaching in the area in 1973/4. He was a lawyer but rarely practiced. I met a distant cousin of his called Ashley de Vos in Colombo in late 1973 (I see the name mentioned in my old travel journals which I am transferring to computer disk presently). Charles passed away in the late 1970s. He was a real character and came from a good Burgher family, of which frankly he was something of a black sheep! Reportedly a brilliant law student as a young man, Charlie was no workaholic, in fact when I knew him in his fifties he lived in rather reduced circumstances in the Galle Fort YMCA and his main legal work was rumoured to consist of occasionally defending his Sinhalese common law wife when she occasionally got involved in a fracas with her elderly mother. He had relatives in Australia, like many Burghers. You will see the (fictional version of the?) de Vos family in the person of Maria de Vos mentioned in the 1986 novel, Colombo Heat, by Christopher Hudson. I realize none of the above is likely to be of much use, but I thought that I would send it to you anyway. Best of luck with your quest!
