In the book 'Tombstones and Monuments of Ceylon' by J.P.Lewis (1913) reference is made to Margaret Jessie Northway wife of William Northway who died in Kandy aged 25 years on April 12 1865. William was a coffee
planter on Bowlana Estate Deltota, and was the son of Samuel Northway believed to be the
founder of the Northway family in Ceylon.
The Northways were from a settler family from
Mauritius.Charles Northway was the founder
of a large estate Deviturai in Elpitiya
which was later managed by his son Freddie.
Fred Northway retired in 1968 and went to live on the family property at Wirawila in
Southern Sri Lanka.Fred died some years ago,
and his son Michael continued to live at Wirawila. The Northways were one of the last
remaining British families in Sri Lanka, and
among the few that opted to live it out there.Michael who married a Ms Lover, passed
away about four years ago in Wirawila.He would have been in his late fifties.
