Nalin, from the Ceylon Rifle Regiment records in Kew I have noted from his record that Captain James Stewart was born on the Coramandel coast in India on 19 Dec 1794.
There are notes on both William and James in "Tombstones and Monuments in Ceylon" with relevant later family history, but no names for their wives!
The Madras presidency is where you need to look for his birth and parentage. Try the FIBIS website. As both brothers were in the Army I would suspect the earlier generation would have been too.
Cheers, Larry, in sunny Queensland, Australia.
