Dear Mr. Karunanayake,
Thank you for the further information and I imagine that you are in teh island from the amount of records and access that you appear to have.
I am afraid again I do have the details that you supplied of my Grandmother who died in England here on 15th. February. 1915 and her son Douglas who died in France in the 1st World War on 25th. October. 1918 almost at the end of the war having been awarded the Military Cross for his bravery. It is possible that you will throw up some interesting points such as teh fact that Douglas Wilson's death was found in the Ceylon Green Book. Douglas was never in George Steuarts, a firm that I know quite well and Mr. McLeod in that firm in the 1950's was a great friend of my family.
The people I really do not have very much on are as I have mentioned before and anything about them would be very welcome:
1.John Blackett of the RA in Colombo 1804 at the age of 19 years old. I do not have his date of death or that of his wife Jane. If they remained in teh island after 1815, I imagine that he may have been involved in expanding roads and bridges in the island.
2. James Blackett senior born in Colombo in 1808, married Mary Brown about 1829 to 1831 and I am looking for their marriage certificate through my colleague in Colombo. Also when Mary died which would bew about 1834 to 1845. Also what occupation James had and when he died which could have been anytime from 1853 to 1890 but more likely 1853 to 1873.
3.Finally when Lt.Col. Walter Scott Blackett OBE died which was probably between 1843 to 1846 having been born 1st. February 1867 at Pen-Y-Lan estate in Dolosbage district.
4. If available Obituary for Walter Scott Blackett and for my Grandfather Robert Wilson who died at his Meddegodda estate in 1952.
I suspect these will be more difficult to find and I have asked if my colleague who is in Colombo if he can help.
We also have an interesting conundrum in that we know a George Blackett died died in Colombo in 1809 and in the old Military cemetery above the Maligawa temple there is a tomb to an unknown person that has never been identified but just beside it is the burial stone to James Scott Blackett who was born 1st. October. 1863 to James Blackett junior and his wife Catharine at Pen-Y-Lan estate but died four months later on 4th. March 1864. It puzzeled me as to why he is buried there if his father James Blackett junior was never in the military unless a relation is buried nearby? The guardian of the old cemetery was unable to help me when I was out in the island last.
