George Vanderspar was the scion of a well known family of Dutch origin in Galle. They were the proprietors of a produce export company and estate agency named JJ Vanderspar and Sons formed in 1851 and one of Ceylon's biggest firms of the time based in Galle and later in Colombo. George V was a prominent cricketer who bought the premises of the old Colombo Cricket Club and set up the Colombo Sports Club there which like the CCC was exclusively for Europeans. I believe that Vanderspar had some connection with the Rosehaugh Tea and Rubber Co and lived in Fortrose the property where STC Prep now stands. The house was dilapidated when WT Keble author of Ceylon Beaten Track and master at STC Mt Lavinia helped set up the Prep school there in 1938. The property was purchased by the church which managed the school. Fortrose was one of several large 19 th Century homes situated on the seaside
between Kollupitiya Junction and Galle Face. The others were Egerton House and Framjee House now part of Methodist College,Noorani Villa of HD Fernando,Monsoon Lodge, Storm Lodge now part of the Colombo Swimming Club,The Synagogue then home of Peter de Saram, Sefton,Lindenam, and Rickman House then the home of Meedniya Adigar and later the American Embassy.
