Norah Roberts book is a compilation of information on the history of Galle and is almost encyclopaedic in coverage. It is possible therefore for the occasional error to creep in.I dont know whether there was any VC recipient from Ceylon in WW 1 but Alfred Haverstock Bowman is listed in the Roll of Honour as having been awarded the MC and Bar for operation around Ypress and Courtrai. He was demobbed on 13. 4. 19. Edward Ainsworth Bowman also from Baddegama enlisted from England and served in India.Served in Agia, and Amballa and wounded at Kutel-Amara. Discharged on 21. 6. 19. Annie Bowman also from Baddegama and served in London,Etaples and in France in the Ambulance service. The only Winter recorded in the Roll of Honour is H. Birmingham Winter late of Miller and Co who served as a Captain with the 5 th Gurkhas.
